Restoring a Legend: Watchorn Transport's Western Star

There's nothing we love more at Truck Centre than helping a classic rig shine again—and the latest restoration project to hit our Mt Maunganui yard is an absolute beauty.

All the way from Awakeri, this Western Star comes to us from Watchorn Transport, and it's a truck with real history. Phil Watchorn's father bought this Western Star brand new back in 1997, and it’s been part of the family ever since. Phil picked up the restoration torch more than six years ago, and it's been a true labour of love every step of the way.

Now, we’re stoked to be jumping in to help with the final stages of the build—adding the finishing touches that’ll bring this iconic rig back to its former glory.

Phil’s dedication to this truck is next level. Every detail, every bolt, every panel has had care and thought put into it—and now it’s our turn to add that final bit of polish. We're diving into a full chrome upgrade, interior refurb, and a complete tidy-up of the finer details.

What’s on the cards?

• Chrome, chrome, and more chrome – bumpers, mirrors, trims... you name it, we’re blinging it!

• Upholstery refresh – bringing comfort back to the cab while keeping that vintage vibe.

• Dash switches & bezels – cleaning up the cockpit with a nod to the truck’s heritage.

• Interior styling upgrades – it’s all about Pride in Your Ride, and this cab’s going to reflect that 100%.

This Western Star isn't just a truck—it’s a legacy on wheels. And when it rolls out of our yard, it'll be a head-turning tribute to old-school trucking pride, with all the shine and swagger it deserves.
